The idea behind having a backsplash began with wanting to protect your walls from splashes, sputters, and spills. As a matter of fact, it’s hard to imagine a kitchen without this design staple. THE DIGITAL EXPERIENCE

When designing your kitchen, a digital layout can be a handy tool to have when it comes to your countertops. A digital layout shows what a quartz or natural slab countertop will look like once it’s cut according to the digital template. Our shop foreman, Reggie, is in charge of providing this essential service so our customers can have a countertop preview to refer to. It’s especially important for larger jobs that require full high backsplash or waterfalls and for any countertop project that requires the use of seams.

Once you purchase a digital layout, an appointment is set up with Reggie. During this consultation, Reggie asks questions pertaining to the slab itself. Questions like, “What attracted you to this stone?” The reason he asks is so that he can try and capture what you like and don’t like about your stone. “My job requires that I reveal the idea you have in your head of your ideal kitchen. This process also allows me to maximize the beauty of the stone by following a customer’s vision and the slab’s natural flow.”

After the initial conversation, Reggie will begin scanning and laying out the stone. Once he has completed the digital layout of your slab, he will then email over your preview. Once you’ve reviewed and approved your layout, it is placed on the schedule for fabrication.

Marble is timeless.  For centuries it has been a symbol of wealth and style…a go to choice for  royalty, heads of state, and the rich and famous. In fact, luxury brand stores and hotels feature marble on a grand scale. Marble is a natural stone that comes in exquisite colors that has delighted homeowners for years. But, can it withstand your everyday life? Your spills, grease accidents and the like? The answer is yes. Yet, somewhere along the line despite all of its breathtaking, natural qualities, it has acquired a misguided stigma for being “soft” and therefore a no-no as a kitchen countertop when, in fact, marble has been beloved by many, including chefs and  bakers, for centuries because it allows them to keep dough from getting too overheated when kneading. However, there is such a thing as a “hard” marble called dolomite, a mineral which is denser, more durable and not as susceptible to staining and etching. One “hard” marble  that is insanely popular is fantasy brown. But we suggest you walk through our yard so our designers can explain and show you the difference.

While marble is regarded as porous, it is more heat resistant than its counterpart quartz. Different finishes can diminish etching and scratches. It looks beautiful in a honed or matte finish. And a brushed or textured finish is also a gorgeous way to customize your countertop. Progressive Dimensions offers a 15 year sealer that prevents staining and will give you a piece of mind.

Marble, like other natural stones, should be cleaned with mild soaps or special stone cleaners. Usually, just wiping off  dirt with a wet sponge is sufficient for daily maintenance. You can prevent stains caused by red wine or oils by using a cutting board, coasters and by wiping off spills right away.

Black Is The New Neutral

We know that it’s an exciting time when you’re renovating your kitchen and buying countertops is a big part of it. Recently, we welcomed our first customers at our new fourth store in Shrewsbury. They did their homework and had lots of questions. She, however, likes quartz, while he likes granite. So, we were happy to give them a tour of our indoor slab yard filled with both quartz and natural stone. And, as we talked, they learned about stone and we learned about our new community. We couldn’t have asked for better customers. We started with the difference between quartz and granite. Quartz is manmade while granite comes from deep within the earth. Quartz has beautiful, consistent veining that looks a lot like marble, while each slab of granite is unique with pretty variations throughout.

 

Care and maintenance of countertops was a big worry for these homeowners. I always assure my customers that quartz and natural stone are very durable and can definitely hold up to everyday use.  Although you shouldn’t place a hot pot on quartz, it can withstand other sources of heat like a coffee mug, a hot plate or a bowl of soup. Natural stone, on the other hand, can take a hot pot, but we recommend that you don’t make it a habit. If you need to put it on your granite or quartz top, use a trivet or pot holder. As far as stains go, cleaning up spills right away is a good rule of thumb. Natural stone such as granite, quartzite and marble, must be sealed which is why we recommend our 15 year sealer for peace of mind.  Quartz, on the other hand, does not need to be sealed at all. Wiping down your countertops with soap and water is fine or you can use countertop cleaners just as long as it doesn’t have ammonia, bleach, or vinegar. We use Windex Multi Surface on our countertops.

 

As far as colors, she was looking for white with gray veining like Borghini Silver, which is very much on trend. While he preferred a pop of color like Vivid Green which is becoming more popular. Overall, they enjoyed this part the best and were impressed with all the different stone choices.

 

Finally, we told them about our process. Not only do we have expert designers with years of experience, we also digitally template, and fabricate, as well as, install. Our knowledgeable staff will guide you through each and every step. They finally agreed on a quartz color called Portrush from the Cambria brand. It is white with blue veining. I guess you can say they met in the middle.
